'Thunderbolts*' Blazes Past Notorious 43% Rotten Tomatoes 2000s Marvel Stinker at Domestic Box Office (2)

With a largely empty playing field this weekend, Marvel's Thunderbolts* is poised to top the domestic charts for the second time in a row. The superhero movie claimed the number one spot in its debut, grossing a respectable (if not extraordinary) $74 million at the domestic box office. Including Friday's $9 million haul, the film's running total has passed the coveted $100 million mark. In just around a week of release, Thunderbolts* has also overtaken the lifetime domestic hauls of past superhero movies such as the mega-budget dud The Marvels, M. Night Shyamalan's Unbreakable, and Ben Affleck's disappointing Daredevil.

Directed by Jake Schreier, Thunderbolts* is projected to gross around $35 million in its sophomore frame, which would represent a solid 53% drop. This is in line with Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, which ended up grossing over $200 million domestically and more than $400 million worldwide. The trouble is that, unlike Shang-Chi, Thunderbolts* doesn't have to deal with pandemic-related disruptions in audience behavior. Marvel Studios has been struggling with consistency in the post-pandemic era, and despite the excellent reviews and audience response, Thunderbolts* will ultimately finish in the $400 million range worldwide — this is about half as much as a movie of this size should be doing.

On the other hand, Ryan Coogler's Sinners continued to deliver major results as it entered its fourth frame. The movie is expected to gross around $20 million this weekend, after having generated around $6 million on Friday. Incidentally, fellow Warner Bros. blockbuster A Minecraft Movie grossed a little over $20 million in its fourth weekend as well. But it opened with over $160 million, which is roughly $110 million more than Sinners' opening weekend haul of $48 million. This goes to show just how resilient the vampire movie has been during its theatrical run. It'll pass the $210 million mark by Sunday.

A Trio of New Releases Claimed the Fifth, Sixth, and Seventh Spots

Speaking of Minecraft, the video game adaptation is expected to take the third spot, after having completed over a month of release. The movie made around $2 million on Friday, and will likely pass the $405 million mark by Sunday. Globally, the film is making one final push towards the coveted $1 billion mark. The fourth spot was claimed by Amazon MGM's The Accountant 2, which grossed $1.6 million on its third Friday. The movie is aiming for just under $6 million this weekend, which should be enough for it to hit the $50 million mark. The top five list was rounded out by IFC's Clown in a Cornfield, which is eyeing around $3 million this weekend, outperforming fellow new releases Friendship and Fight or Flight. Stay tuned to Collider for more box office coverage over the weekend.
